Raja Ampat is world-renowned for its breathtaking nature, crystal-clear waters, and iconic island landscapes. One of its most famous landmarks is Wayag, known for its stunning karst formations and panoramic viewpoints. Unfortunately, we would like to inform you that Wayag is currently temporarily closed to tourism.
Why is Wayag closed?
According to recent reports, demonstrations and blockades have been organized in the Wayag area by the indigenous Kawe tribe, who hold customary rights to the land. These actions are in response to growing concerns about potential mining activities in the Raja Ampat region.
Out of respect for the local communities and based on recommendations from local authorities, all tourism activities to Wayag are currently suspended until further notice.
"To ensure safety and respect indigenous land rights, visits to Wayag are temporarily being redirected to alternative destinations."
The good news: Raja Ampat remains open
We understand this may be disappointing, especially for travelers who were looking forward to visiting Wayag. However, the majority of Raja Ampat remains open and safe to explore. There are still countless stunning destinations where you can experience the untouched beauty, vibrant marine life, and rich culture of the region.
Some wonderful alternatives include:
Piaynemo – a smaller but equally spectacular viewpoint similar to Wayag
Arborek and Sawinggrai – welcoming villages with nearby manta ray hotspots
Mansuar - world-famous for snorkeling and diving
Kri Island and Cape Kri – world-famous for snorkeling and diving
and more...
